Pilot-scale study based on integrated fixed-film activated sludge process for cement industrial wastewater treatment

Due to the lack of freshwater resources in Egypt, cement wastewater treatment was performed widen range water used irrigation face massive future scarcity. In this study, integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) as a biological method. A laboratory pilot established simulation IFAS process. The scale-pilot consists primary sedimentation tank, an tank equipped with air blower, and final settling tank. Three experimental attempts were using 3 different bio-carriers. first trial, Luffa sponges natural bio-carriers polyurethane (PU) artificial second addition combination between PU hybrid bio-carrier third trial. After analyzing physicochemical properties at national research center Cairo, removal efficiency TSS (total suspended solids), COD (chemical oxygen demand) , BOD(biological demand), TN nitrogen), TP phosphorous) 94.5%, 87.8%, 90.8%, 75.9%, 69.4%, respectively case sponges. It can be concluded that process effective for effluent met Egyptian code limitations reuse agriculture purposes.
